Friday Cancellations (updated 2:55 PM Thursday):

We are starting to get some cancellations for Friday:

– Eudora School District.  All district schools, including the Eudora-De Soto Technical Education Center, will be closed.

Road Condition Update (3:00 PM Thursday):

Roads are sill treacherous out there. Since the snowblower ran out of gas, we had to venture to one of the fine convenience stores in Eudora to obtain more and roads are either snow packed or slick.  Be careful if your out and about this afternoon.

We did notice a couple of cars abandoned off in the ditch near the old Nottingham Elementary School on our little excursion. With the amount of snow and the fact that plows have pushed even more next to those stuck vehicles,  they might be able to get towed out there by June.

Forecasters are expecting the snow to come again later on today adding an additional one to three inches on top of what we got this morning.

We will keep you updated on any further developments as they occur.

Storm Update: 9:30 AM

The City of Eudora posted this information a short time ago on their Facebook Page:

SNOW REMOVAL UPDATE: Snow began around 5:30 a.m. and crews were dispatched to begin removal. With the pace of the snowfall, the department is only able to keep the main routes open (church street, main street, 10th street, 12th street, Winchester, 14th and elm to the recreation center, and 28th street). These main routes will be the focus of the public works crews until they are able to get ahead and move to other interior residential streets.

The next crew will come on at 8:00 p.m. and work through the night.

With 6+ inches already on the ground and lots more to come, any travel is strongly discouraged.

Also: Got Pictures? We will be posting some here and on our Facebook page. If you have photos of the snow, you can send them to: editor@eudorareporter.com

Storm Update: 8:30 AM

Well Q has made it’s entrance stage left to Eudora and is blanketing the area with large amounts of snow.  Snow began around 5:00 AM in the area and began covering roads by 6:00 AM. In a very unofficial measurement at 8:00 AM, my backyard has approximately 2.5 inches and it is still coming down heavily.

All travel is heavily discouraged today as most places are closed due to the weather.  Zero visibility is being widely reported by KDOT.

Officials are saying that if you get stranded out on the highways, you should stay in your vehicle and call for assistance.  If you are on a state or federal highway (any highway that begins with I-, K-, and US-) you can dial *47 for assistance.  If you are on the turnpike, you can dial *KTA for help and of course anywhere you can always dial 911.

For travel during winter storms, drivers should use caution, allow plenty of driving time, buckle up (every passenger, every time) and be sure to turn on their headlights, and turn off their cruise control.  Drivers should also provide for a safe distance or cushion between themselves and vehicles ahead of them.

Update: 8:55 AM Wednesday

The National Weather Service has updated its Winter Storm Warning for the state of Kansas. The Warning is now in effect from Midnight Wednesday to Midnight Thursday.  Snow is expected to start falling late Wednesday/early Thursday and snow until sometime Thursday evening.  Current forecasts say accumulations will be in the 8 to 12 inch range.  Some sleet is also possible south of the Turnpike.  Windy conditions will also accompany the storm with sustained winds between 15 mph and 25 mph and gusts around 30 mph.

Travel is expected to be difficult if not impossible due to snow packed and possibly icy roads.  Forecasters say that snowfall rates during the day on Thursday could be 1 to 2 inches per hour.

Eudora Public Works Director Mike Hutto tells us that his staff is already preparing for the storm.

“Starting today we will be working 12 hour shifts around the clock.  Crews are working 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM today and then we will have the second shift coming in at 8:00 PM tonight and working through the night,”  Hutto said.  He added that they will begin treating streets with salt and sand as soon as the precipitation starts and that crews would be working until the storm is over.

One cancellation has already come in:

The Eudora Chamber of Commerce meeting scheduled for Thursday, has been rescheduled for next Thursday, February 28th at Noon.  The meeting will take place at Cutter’s Smokehouse.

We will continue to keep you posted on any cancellations and problems caused by this winter storm.  Updates here will be time stamped so you know you have the latest information.  Stay safe and warm.
