Year in review
Eudora News and Information – www.eudorareporter.com
Well, it’s time to close the book on another year and we definitely are doing it on a snowy note.
Snow is one of the things that was mostly absent from 2012. (A good Chiefs football team was also absent but we will let our friends cover the mess in Kansas City.)
What wasn’t absent was an abundance of politics, comings and goings and even a couple of our own appearing on National TV shows. Today we begin our look back at the stories of importance in 2012. As Kasey Kasem used to say – On with the Countdown.
10. Wolf Hamlin & Broderick Topil appear on national TV shows
Former Eudora resident Wolf Hamlin made an appearance on the Fox TV show American Idol back in January. Hamlin, a 2005 graduate of Eudora high, didn’t make the final round of contestants but he certainly gave a show during his audition segment on an aircraft carrier in San Diego. Hamlin returned in the summer to give friends a family a treat during the CPA picnic and a show at Cutter’s Smokehouse.
Broderick Topil a 15 year-old resident of Eudora, showed off his coupon skills on the TLC program “Extreme Couponing” in November. In some hilarious moments of the segment, we saw Topil and his sisters diving through the recycle bins at Eudora Elementary to find a much needed coupon. We also chuckled at how the 15 year old boy had collected a large supply of feminine hygiene products. Topil did note that the family donated many of the items that cost them very little or nothing to various charities.
9. School Resource Officer going/staying
This summer, the Eudora Police Department discussed the possibility of eliminating the School Resource Officer position. Many residents, parents of students and ultimately, the City Commission voiced opposition to eliminating the position and the decision was reversed to keep the officer in place.
8. K-10 Cable installation
After a group of citizens and the Mayor spent 2011 fighting for installation of cable median barriers on K-10, the cables finally went up in October 2012. KDOT spent a month getting the cables in place for an approximately two mile stretch between the Eudora exits and a mile on either side of the K-10/K-7 interchange in Johnson County.
7. C & S Market becomes Gene’s Heartland Foods
While we had several business come and go in Eudora in 2012, nothing was bigger than the sale of C & S Market to the Gene’s Heartland Foods chain. GHF took over on July 1, 2012 and began to remodel and enhance the store. Many people have commented how the prices have gotten more competitive to the Lawrence grocery stores and it means that Eudora will have a grocery store for several years to come.
6. The Eudora Cardinals return to the State Championship for the second straight year
Despite losing several seniors from the 2011 team, the Cardinals made a return trip to the State Championship in November. The team finished the season 12-2 with a heart breaking 21-0 loss to Holton in the finals. The team lost only one game during the regular season to St. James Academy and then went on to put together an impressive run in the playoffs to work their way back to Salina on Thanksgiving weekend.
We have some more yet to review but we will save that Top 5 for New Year’s Day. Make sure to check back and see what made the Top 5 of 2012 on the first Day of 2013.
