In-service days

Agricultural analogies are common in Kansas. Just as farmers appreciate the boost to soil that a good fertilizer can bring, so school districts everywhere rely on In-service to fuel educational progress. Private and public schools across the state are required by law to set aside time each school year for teachers and staff to stay current on research, teaching techniques, programs and mandates that affect the way students learn and districts operate.

Topics can include learning how to effectively integrate technology in the classrooms, how to organize instruction for all learners, learning about the risks of blood born pathogens and other public health issues. Teachers across grade levels can meet to discuss test scores and reflect on their successes and what is needed for continued improvement. Ideas are shared and important decisions are made during this critical time called In-service. But while the teachers and other staff members are working hard to move forward, what are the children doing?

PLAN AHEAD

First, it’s important, as a stakeholder in the district, for parents and child care providers to know when the In-service days will happen. The official district calendar can be found on the www.eudoraschools.org website and can be printed in PDF format and hung on a refrigerator door. Other pertinent days off are also listed on the district calendar such as Parent/Teacher conference days and Holidays. Be prepared.

Sign up at www.eudoraschools.org for the handy new on-line activity calendar. It is an easy to use tool that lists up-to-date school activities and events. Users can view and print a daily, weekly or monthly list of calendar events in PDF format. It also includes a search option if you need to find a specific event and can even send you e-mail reminders for events you select.

GROW YOUR OWN FUN

Check the official district calendar to see when days off will occur and plan to do something fun and educational with your kids. Many days off fall on a three day weekend perfect for traveling to visit relatives or camping. Museums often have special kids activities on In-service days and parks are often not quite as crowded as on weekends. Check local papers to find out where and when cultural festivals are happening and don’t forget the Zoo’s in Topeka and Kansas City are always a fun get away. If taking time off of work isn’t an option, knowing when you’ll need a sitter can help you secure one in advance.

Learning doesn’t always happen in a classroom. When the teachers are busy building their skills, parents, caregivers and kids can have their own In-service by exploring hands-on learning opportunities right in their own backyard and fertilizing the fields of imagination.
