Cooling Centers

The National Weather Service has posted an excessive heat warning until 7PM Wednesday evening.  Hot weather, as anyone who has spent ten minutes outside knows, has moved into the area and will remain throughout the weekend and well into next week. High temperatures from the upper 90’s to mid 100’s are expected each day with lows only falling to the mid 70’s to lower 80’s at night.

We checked with the City of Eudora to see if there was any designated cooling centers. Eudora City administrator John Harrenstein stated that while said there was no place yet designated as an official cooling center, it will be discussed with the City Council in the near future.

“We are currently recommending to those that don’t have air conditioning or need a place to get a break from the heat, to visit either the Eudora Public Library or The Eudora Recreation Center” Harrenstein said.

The Eudora Public Library is open 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays and 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM on Saturday.

The Eudora Rec Center is open  7:30 AM to 7:00 PM weekdays, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Saturday and 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM Sunday.  The pool is also available at the Rec Center during those hours.

The question we want to know the answer to is simply:   Do you think they City of Eudora should have officially designated cooling centers?

An officially designated cooling center is where people would be able to gather in an air conditioned building when the temperature reaches above a predetermined level. Free water would be available and more amenities such as health care personnel may be available for medical assistance related to heat induced symptoms and conditions.

All citizens and, in particular, infants, young children and older residents should try to stay out of oppressive heat as much as possible.  Make sure to drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids and loose comfortable clothing is also recommended.  Try to limit outdoor activities to early morning or late evening and take frequent breaks.
