Several residents driving near Eudora on K-10 on Wednesday night were treated to the large spectacle of field fire near East 1900 Road. Luckily, this was the annual controlled burn of the asparagus fields on Pendleton Farm located near the exit on K-10.
Jenifer Harmon who had traveled to the location, worried that an out of control fire had started, stated “I had never seen a field burning (controlled or otherwise) before and found it to be an amazing sight.”
She talked to farm owners John and Karen Pendleton who explained the process of controlled burns and why famrers do these burns on an annual basis. The Pendletons also said that the first of the season’s asparagus should be ready in about a week.
There were no reports of injuries or incidental damage from the fire.
Thanks to reader Jenifer Harmon for the information and the picture.
