On Saturday, May 7, community organizations pulled together for this year’s Bike Rodeo and Helmet Giveaway. Sponsors included Keith Nowland’s State Farm Insurance office, Eudora Police, Douglas County Safekids, The Eudora School District, the Eudora Volunteer Fire Department, Subway, the Douglas County Sheriff’s office, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, and Vitazest.

Safekids coordinator John Dees reports that the Eudora event has tremendous impact. “Last year, Eudora distributed 300 helmets, which is extraordinary when one considers that Lawrence, with a population of almost 100,000, distributed 500.” Five hundred helmets were available for distribution at Saturday’s event.

The Eudora Police Department is again pleased to provide free bicycle helmets as a part of their annual bike safety awareness event. All helmets are custom fitted for children under 15 years of age.

The rodeo and fair will be held, rain or shine, Saturday, May 7th, from 10 am to 1 pm at the Eudora Elementary School, 801 East 10th Street.

Activites planned include bike inspections, a bicycle rodeo course, a bike safety course, and a Safe Ride Course. Lunches will be available to purchase from EHS Culinary Arts Students. The school will also be collecting non-perishable food items for the Eudora Food Pantry.

The bike fair offers families the opportunity to learn about the rules of the board, bike safety, and bike trail etiquette. For more information, contact Chrissy Mayer at 785-542-4940 extension 1913 or email chrissymayer@eudoraschools.org.
