The 2011 Eudora Cardinal 8 and under football team closed its league season with a 52-18 win Sunday over McClouth at the Field of Dreams in Basehor, Kansas. The win culminates the first undefeated season by a Eudora team that went 7-0 in the Kaw Valley League. Historically the Kaw Valley League is a tough place to play as Eudora faced other teams from Piper, Tonganoxie, Basehor and Bonner Springs.
The Cardinals outscored their opponents 185-44 through the course of the season. A season that started with quarterback Caden Nichols going down with a fractured leg leaving the team to find a replacement. Reece Gasser answered the call and moved from his usual starting tackle position to lead the team.
“We certainly endured our share of obstacles and I am thrilled with how this entire team responded as these kids stepped up and represented our community in a very positive fashion,” said Eudora youth Coach Bret Stouder, “It was nice to be surrounded by a great group of coaches and parents that define how sportsmanship should be taught to our youth athletes. I congratulate them all on a great season.”
Eudora will look to continue its success on the field as they are set to participate in the 2011 NYSSO Midstates Championships in Lawrence this weekend.
“We expect to see a new level of competition as we are set to play all-star teams from Topeka and Wichita” Stouder said, “This is a great opportunity for the kids to learn the game of football at a very high level. The scoreboard does not matter this weekend, these guys deserve to go out and just have fun.”
