The Eudora School District has hired Steve Splichal as Superintendent effective July 1. Splichal will replace current Superintendent Don Grosdidier who will retire on June 30.

Splichal comes from the McLouth School District where he has served as Superintendent  since 2011.

“I’m very excited to come here to Eudora,” Splichal said following the School Board meeting on Thursday night. “This community has a passion for the kids and the schools and I see this as an exciting opportunity.”

Splichal told us that he like a small town atmosphere and the characteristics of the community.

“You stop in any business or restaurant and you can’t find anyone who doesn’t have the passion for the schools in this town,” Splichal added.

Eudora School Board President Eric Votaw praised the new Superintendent.

“We’re thrilled. We are so happy we found a man of his caliber and experience,” Votaw stated. “He brings small town values to the table with great expertise and will work well with and in our community.”

Grosdidier also liked the decision the board made.

“I think it’s a good hire.  Steve is an experienced superintendent and comes from the area,” Grosdidier said.

Grosdidier was also impressed on how quickly the School Board acted.

“I want to commend the board for moving as quickly as it did.  This will allow time for Steve and I to work together which will help with a smooth transition,” Grosdidier said.  “I’m proud of how they handled this and complete what I know was a difficult choice.”

Splichal comes from a district that is only about a third of the size of Eudora. The McLouth School District 2012-2013 enrollment was 521 students compared to Eudora’s 1,597.  We asked if there would be more challenges moving to a much larger district than he has dealt with over the last three years.

“I think regardless of size, the issues are similar for any school district,” Splichal said. “Don talked about finances in there (during the board meeting) and that issue is the same in all districts.”

We talked with some families who have students in the McLouth School District and all praised Splichal’s leadership over the last few years.

Splichal said that it was bitter-sweet to be leaving McLouth.

“We worked hard at establishing a good District up there and I know they will do well in the future,” he said. “But there was a handful of places that I circled on the map that if a leadership position ever opened up, I was going to take a shot at it. Eudora was one of those circled.”

Splichal said that his family plans on moving to the Eudora area from McLouth.

“While it’s only about 20 miles from McLouth to here, my family and I believe that it’s important to be a part of the community. I’m not interested in commuting.”
