Put out your sign and they will come. At least that’s how it seemed to Diane Elmer when she passed inspection and put the OPEN sign on the door of Heads or Nails Family Salon, 713 Main St., almost 5 years ago. Her first day of business was March 30, 2009, and she was swamped with customers from noon to 9 pm that very day.
“People just came,” said Elmer. “People I didn’t even know. That entire first week I was booked solid. Eudora has been so supportive of me.”
Diane Elmer wasn’t a novice when she opened the shop in Eudora. She’s been in the business of cosmetology since 1980. Prior to opening Heads or Nails she worked in a salon in Lenexa. Reading the book The Secret made her stop and think about what she really wanted to be doing with her life, and she realized that opening her own shop had always been her dream. Since she grew up in Linwood, she was familiar with Eudora and decided to pursue starting her business here.
“I prayed about it,” explained Elmer, “and I knew I wanted to be in a small town. Eudora was a perfect fit.”
And she is perfect for the job. “I absolutely adore people. And I like being able to give good services at reasonable prices,” she said.
Besides giving haircuts, manicures, pedicures, perms, hair color and even eyebrow and eyelash dyeing (really!), Elmer enjoys being a listening ear to her clients. She feels a special bond with her clients and tries to work with them to get just the style they want. And if someone isn’t happy with the result? The client just needs to let Elmer know and she’ll do her best to get it right. It’s this old fashioned service that has surely helped her salon become a Eudora business success story.
While she loves her job, work isn’t always easy for Diane Elmer. She deals daily with a painful bladder syndrome called Interstitial Cystitis, and has to go for weekly treatments. It’s a disease that has no cure and often doesn’t respond well to treatment. The disease causes her to occasionally take some time off work, but while it may slow her down it’s not going to keep her from doing what she loves. She has plans to be in business for a long time.
“If it wasn’t for my health, I’d be open 6 days a week, 12 hours a day,” laughed Elmer. Though she can’t do the twelve hour days, she is open five days a week and takes clients by appointment only. Her hours vary, depending on the needs of clients. Sometimes working early in the morning and other times staying late into the evening, she tries hard to accommodate her clients’ schedules.
The community has been supportive of Heads or Nails, and Elmer has in turn been supportive of the community. She can be counted on for her support for such projects as the All Night Prom, the Horse Thief Run and Open Hearts Preschool trivia night.
To celebrate 5 years in business, April is Customer Appreciation Month at Heads or Nails. During the month of April clients will receive $5 off of services like perms, highlights, low lights, etc. or $2 off a haircut. Elmer will have weekly drawings for $20 gift certificates, and a drawing for a large basket of products at the end of the month.
