This Monday night at 6:30PM, the Lawrence/Douglas County Planning Commission will one again reevaluate the proposal to allow a sand pit operation north of Eudora near the Kansas River. This sand pit would be located on the grounds of the former Eudora Country Club.
In February, the Lawrence/Douglas County Planning Commission tabled the issue for 90 days so the commission could do more research and look more in depth at the issue. At that meeting, both the Eudora Planning Commission and the staff of the Lawrence/Douglas County Planning commission recommended against approving the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) permit.
Eudorareporter.com has learned that the both the Eudora Planning Commission and the staff of the Lawrence/Douglas County Planning Commission still plan on not recommending the permit at Monday’s meeting. The ultimate decision of approval or denial will rest with Lawrence/Douglas County Planning Commission.
If the Lawrence/Douglas County Planning Commission does approve the permit, it will then move to the Corps of Engineers for their approval or denial.
Lois Hamilton, a land owner in the area of the proposed plant has fought aggressively against the operation. Last week, Hamilton sent out post cards to all residents of the city that outlined her reasons she is against the plant.
Monday nights hearing will take place at Lawrence City Hall, 6 East 6th Street.
