Crowds will once again descend on downtown Eudora for the annual C.P.A. picnic. The 113th edition of the picnic will feature the carnival rides, games, music, food and friendship that many from around the area enjoy each summer.
While the carnival rides opened on Thursday evening, the big events get going Friday night. The Children’s parade is the opening event with registration starting at 6:00 PM at Pilla Park, located at 7th and Main Streets. The parade will start at 7:00 PM and travel down Main Street from 7th Street and wind up near the fire station. Cash prizes will be awarded by CPA organizers as well for this parade. Friday’s nights music band is Extra Ordinary (that’s their name, time will tell if they live up to it) and will take to the gazebo stage in CPA Park at 8:00 PM.
Events will take place through the afternoon and evening on Saturday with the Grand Parade kicking off at Laws field at 7:00 PM. Registration for that parade will start at 6:00 PM and be at Laws Field. The parade should follow the normal route north down Elm Street then turn west at 15th and over to Maple Street. The parade goes north on Maple so that it can pass in front of Medicalodges Eudora. At 14th Street, it turns back east to Main Street and then heads north up Main Street finishing at 7th and Main.
Following the Grand Parade, Atomic Possum (that’s their name, time will tell if they live up to it) will be featured in the gazebo starting at 8:00 PM.
Weather wise, it will be a couple of warm days with highs near 100 and lows in the lower 70’s. Make sure to dress comfortably and drink plenty of fluids while your out in the heat.
The CPA (Central Protective Association) was formed in the late 1800′s to help farmers and ranchers protect their livestock and horses from rustlers and thieves. The first CPA picnic occurred in downtown Eudora in 1901.
