Eastern Douglas County residents can expect to hear three loud blasts between 1 and 2 this afternoon.

Ken Keiter, a fire inspector in Johnson County, said a company would be disposing of explosives at the former Sunflower Army Ammunition plant, near De Soto.

“They’ll likely be loud,” he said.

Local fire crews will monitor the blasts, but Keiter said the noise should be the only effect of the blast.

The blasts are also expected to be audible in western Johnson County as well.

  • I bet Eudora hears it, but I wonder if I will here in Lawrence.

  • I heard nothing here in Lawrence. Did Eudora?

  • I was home on Monday afternoon and didn’t hear anything. I live over by West Elementary and K-10 is just a couple blocks away from my house. If I had heard anything I would have assumed it was a crash (I didn’t read this story until after the blasting time). My dogs didn’t seem to notice anything unusual, either.
